Sri Lankan-Australian Lawyers Association's Q&A Session in Parliament of Victoria

We are thrilled to share highlights from our recent Q&A session held at the Parliament of Victoria, where our members had the honour of interacting with Shadow Attorney General The Hon. Michael O'Brien MP, a former senior commercial barrister.

During this insightful event, we discussed pressing issues in our justice system, including the impact of recent budget cuts on court backlogs and the resulting frustration for clients, lawyers, and judges. Michael O'Brien shared his valuable perspective on balancing the roles of our law-making bodies and the judiciary.

Key topics included:

  • Promoting private arbitration and alternative dispute resolution to ease court pressure.
  • Addressing delays in renewing lawyers’ annual practicing certificates when there is an investigation based on lawyers' compliance.
  • Focusing on the mental wellbeing of legal professionals.

Law students in attendance showed great interest in internship opportunities at the Parliament. Michael O'Brien MP encouraged them to reach out to his team.

If you’re a law student or graduate seeking such opportunities, please contact the SALA team via email or Facebook message with your resume and cover letter, and we will assist in connecting you with the right contacts.

We also celebrated the remarkable achievement of Nilanka Goonetillake, who was appointed as a Barrister to the Victorian Bar on May 2, 2024.

Special thanks to Evan Mulholland MP for facilitating this event and to David Southwick MP for his thoughtful contributions
